Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
